Description: We’re excited to announce for International Women’s Day on 8th March we’re screening ‘The Woman King’ – Inspired by true events the film follows the all-female Agojie warriors who protect the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s against an enemy determined to destroy their way of life.We can’t wait to hear from guest speakers Kate McLaven (Joseph Rowntree Foundation Emerging Futures Team/ York Anti Racist Collective) and Sarah Huggett (Changing Lives/York Anti Racist Collective) who will be sharing their fascinating and important work in our city. As always, expect a lovely atmosphere, table seating, licensed bar and a chance to chat to your friends during the interval.

TWO HOUSES, ONE STORY: YORK’S FORGOTTEN WOMEN

A collaboration between Fairfax House and The Bar Convent
EXHIBITION 2nd March – 27th April

Description: This exciting collaboration explores the intertwining story of two Catholic houses; one a secret convent operating a pioneering school for girls, the other belonging to a prominent local Catholic family. Recently discovered documents, beautiful portraits and intriguing artefacts give new insight into the day to day lives of these exceptional local women. It will explore how they navigated their faith during an era of persecution and suspicion, and how some were linked to dangerous underground activity which ultimately aided the survival of the Catholic faith in York and beyond.

YorSexual Health Centre, Scarborough, Northway: Walk-in and wait clinic, Friday 8th March, 9:00- 11:00am.
Services at all the above clinics include cervical screening (smears), contraception choices/advice on contraception issues, contraception after pregnancy, emergency contraception, and STI testing and treatment.

Her book documents the lives of twenty women of York including Anne Lister, Margaret Clitherow, witch Jennet Preston, and rebel entrepreneurs Mary Tuke and Mary Ann Craven.  Claire will be talking about her book, and the women in it, as well as answering questions – so come and join us at this free event.

‘Challenges for Palestinian Feminists Now’ with Dr Nabila Espanioly

Description: During York International Women’s Week, the Centre for Women’s Studies (in association with the Centre for Applied Human Rights and the University of York Palestinian Solidarity Collective) will be hosting a talk by clinical psychologist Nabila Espanioly, a feminist and activist from Nazareth. Nabila is the founder of the ground-breaking Al-Tufula Center, a women’s centre in Nazareth that aims to empower Arab women in Israel using a feminist approach. Dr Piergiuseppe Parisi (CAHR) and Haddi Malik (PSC) will chair the event.
